Lee Won Hee is a retired South Korean judoka, commentator, coach and university professor. He graduated from Boseong High School and later obtained a bachelor’s degree in Judo Studies and master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Physical Education, all from Yongin University.
He started gaining notoriety in 2003 when he was selected for the judo national team. He won a gold medal in the 2003 Daegu Summer Universiade and the 2003 World Championships in Osaka. His success continued in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens where he won the gold medal and reached the #1 spot in the world rankings for the 73 kg.-category. He has the longest winning streak in country with 48 straight wins and claimed the gold medal in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.
However, in 2007, he failed to qualify to the World Championships and, a year later, also failed to reach the 2008 Summer Olympics after losing, both times, against Wang Ki Chun. Afterwards, he decided to retire and became a commentator for KBS during the Olympics in Beijing. He also became the coach for the women’s national team and, since 2011, is a professor at his alma mater.
