Kim Seung Joo, known professionally as Hye Eun Yi, is a South Korean singer and broadcaster. She graduated from Hohodon Girls’ High School and did not attend college. She made her debut in 1975 with the song "You Won’t Know" and her impressive vocals and her beauty immediately made her one of the most popular female singers in South Korea during the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1977 she released her 2nd album and it was an immediate success earning her the Pacific Music Festival grand prize in 1978. She set a fashion trend with the clothes and hairstyles among women during many years and her songs topped the chart lists for weeks. She made her acting debut in the 1977 MBC drama "Why Are You Doing That?" and she caused the "Hye Eun Yi" syndrome across the country as she was labeled the "First National Sister". She was crowned as the King Singer in MBC’s "Top 10 Singer Song Festival" in 1977 and 1979.
She married a businessman many years older than her in 1984 after it was revealed she was 5-months pregnant with their daughter. They divorced in 1988. She later married actor Kim Dong Hyun in 1990 and had one son but the couple had numerous economic problems thanks to Kim’s frauds and poor economic management and when they divorced in 2019, she revealed the immense debt the couple had on a TV show. Since then, she is trying to return to being a more frequent presence on TV by appearing in several shows and also doing OSTs for a few dramas.
