Henny Savenije was Dutch and met his Korean wife in the Netherlands more than 20 years ago. They endured both Cultural differences and Economic difficulties. This became more and more difficult and his wife became homesick and so they moved their family to Korea. A family of four, they have 2 sons. He changed his nationality to Korean. He is a member of the “Hamel Club,” a gathering of Dutch expats in Korea. He also published a book on Hendrick Hamel from the Netherlands, who was shipwrecked on Jeju Island while heading to Japan in 1653. Hamel’s story is portrayed in the 2009 drama, ‘Tamra, The Island’.
Savenije was at Kookmin University as a lecturer for English and Educational Psychology. He is now a Counseling Psychologist and Doctor of Psychology at Hyupsung University and an Actor on occasion. When his childrens friends say "Your dad is a foreigner", Savenije proudly says, "No, I’m Korean, my father is a foreigner!"
