Ok Hee, a 6-year-old girl, lives with her mother, grandmother and housekeeper in what the rural village refers to as the “widow house.” Their proper, feminine life is disrupted when Mr. Han, a relative’s friend, comes to live with them as a boarder. Ok Hee immediately takes to the man, and they develop a special bond. Ok Hee’s mother and Mr. Han also grow to have feelings for one another – mostlyfrom afar – using little Ok Hee to deliver love notes to each other. Although Ok Hee’s mother is a young widow, with much of her life ahead of her, she is tormented by her need to maintain proper decorum as a widow for the sake of her mother-in-law and her daughter. When Mr. Han professes his love for her in a love letter, will Ok Hee’s mother have the courage to overcome societal pressures and accept his love?
